The 3 Things I Look at First in Any Marketing Function
When I look at a marketing function, I don’t start with channels.
Or campaigns.
Or tools.
I start with three things.
Because if these aren’t right, nothing else will be.
1. Clarity
This is always first.
I want to understand:
- Who you’re trying to reach
- What you’re saying
- Why it matters
Most issues start here.
If the message isn’t clear:
- Campaigns won’t land
- Content won’t connect
- Sales conversations become harder
You can’t build on something that isn’t defined.
2. Focus
Next, I look at where effort is going.
- How many priorities are there?
- How many channels are you trying to manage?
- What actually matters right now?
This is where things usually break down.
Too many priorities.
Too much activity.
Not enough impact.
Focus fixes that.
3. Structure
Then I look at how marketing is actually running.
- Is there a clear plan?
- Is activity aligned?
- Is there a rhythm to execution?
Or does everything feel reactive?
Without structure:
- Good ideas don’t land
- Teams lose momentum
- Results become inconsistent
What This Tells Me
Within a short space of time, these three areas show:
- Where things are working
- Where they’re not
- What needs to change
No guesswork.
Just clarity.
What I Don’t Start With
I don’t start with:
- New campaigns
- New tools
- More content
Because those don’t fix the problem.
They often make it worse.
What Happens When You Get These Right
When clarity, focus, and structure are in place:
- Marketing becomes easier to manage
- Teams align quickly
- Decisions become more confident
- Results improve
Everything starts to move in the same direction.
If You’re Not Sure Where to Start
Start here.
Clarity.
Focus.
Structure.
It will tell you more than anything else.
