Your TAM Isn’t a Slide. It’s a Decision Tool.

Intro:
Total Addressable Market (TAM) is one of the most misunderstood concepts in marketing.

Most businesses use it to look bigger.

Very few use it to make better decisions.

The Common Mistake

TAM often gets presented as:

“A £5 billion market”

It sounds impressive.

It’s also useless.

Because it doesn’t tell you:

    • Who you can actually win
    • Where to focus
    • What’s realistic

What TAM Should Do

TAM should help you answer:

    • Where should we focus?
    • How big is the real opportunity?
    • What’s worth pursuing — and what isn’t?

If it doesn’t do that, it’s just noise.

Break It Down Properly

You need three levels:

TAM – The full market
SAM – The segment you can serve
SOM – What you can realistically win

Most businesses skip straight to TAM.

That’s where clarity is lost.

A Practical Example

Instead of:

“Any business that needs marketing support”

Refine it:

    • Founder-led SMEs in the UK
    • £1M–£20M revenue
    • No senior marketing leadership

Now:

    • Your market is smaller
    • Your focus is sharper
    • Your messaging is stronger
    • Your conversion improves

Why This Matters Commercially

Clarity here drives:

    • Better targeting
    • More efficient spend
    • Higher win rates
    • Faster growth

Without it, you spread effort too thin.

The DKIND Take

Bigger isn’t better.

Clearer is better.

A smaller, well-defined market will outperform a large, vague one every time.

Simple Test

    • Do you know your realistic market size?
    • Can you prioritise segments confidently?
    • Are you focusing effort where you can actually win?

If not, your TAM isn’t working for you.
